Lobia/Black Eyed Peas Curry


Serve this tasty and healthy bean curry as a side dish with rotis or rice.Lobia can be prepared in many ways, you can find the dry version here .This is really easy dish to prepare and is packed with protein.You don't have to soak lobia overnight, you can soak for couple of hours before cooking..



Ingredients:-

Lobia:- 1 1/2 - 2 cups
Oil:- 3-4 Tbsp
Cumin/Jeera:- 1 Tsp
Mustard seeds:- 1 Tsp
Ginger(chopped):- 1 Tsp
Garlic(chopped):- 1 Tsp
Onion(chopped):- 1 medium
Tomato(chopped):- 1 medium
Cumin powder:- 1 Tsp
Coriander powder:-1Tsp
Imli/Tamarind paste:- 1 Tbsp
Salt
Turmeric powder:- 1 Tsp
Red chilli powder:- 1 Tsp
Garam Masla Powder:- 1 Tsp
Tomato Paste:- 1 spoonful
Anardana powder:- 1 Tsp

Procedure:-

Soak the Lobia in water overnight or for 2-3 hours before cooking and then boil it by adding 1 tsp of turmeric and salt (as per taste)..

1) Heat oil in a pan jeera /cumin seeds, Mustard , when they start to splutter then add ginger and garlic and fry for a minute.

2)Now add onions, stir it till it becomes brown in color.

3)Add tomatoes , turmeric,Chilli powder ,garam masala, cumin powder, coriander powder & little water(1-2 tbsp approx) , mix it well.

4)Saute the mixture till tomatoes become soft (Approximately for 5-7 minutes)

5) Add boiled lobia , imli paste, tomato paste and anardana powder and mix everything well( add water to make a gravy ).
let it simmer for couple of minutes.

Serve hot garnished with coriander leaves with roti or rice ...Enjoy:)

where do the tomato paste and anardana come in? I put the paste in with the tomatoes...And is there a substitute for the dried pomegranate powder. It sounds amazing! I used amchur. The curry turned out wonderful.

Thanks. If I use canned, cooked Black-eyed peas, how many cans would work for this recipe?

It depends on the size of the can actually, you can try making the masala first and then add canned lobia, it will give you an idea how much you need but I think 2 or 3 cans should be good..considering they are small ones
